The Ocean Cleanup
theoceancleanup.com
The Ocean Cleanup was founded in 2013 by Boyan Slat, an 18-year-old Dutch inventor who dropped out of aerospace engineering after a TEDx talk about cleaning the Great Pacific Garbage Patch went viral. The nonprofit engineers both ends of the problem: giant trawl systems harvesting plastic from the gyre, and Interceptor barges stopping trash in rivers before it reaches the sea. It publishes its research openly and aims to put itself out of business. It is the engineering-moonshot entry in our ocean-cleanup group.
