Earthjustice grew out of the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund, founded in 1971, and became an independent nonprofit law firm with a motto that explains everything: the earth needs a good lawyer. Its hundreds of attorneys represent communities and environmental groups free of charge, suing to block pipelines, defend endangered species, and enforce clean air and water laws. It wins far more often than it loses, and its cases set precedents that outlast administrations. It is the litigation arm of our non-profits collection.
