The Environmental Working Group was founded in 1993 in Washington, DC to make invisible chemical exposure visible to ordinary shoppers. Its databases became household tools: Skin Deep for cosmetics, the Dirty Dozen produce list, tap water reports searchable by zip code, and EWG Verified as its clean-product mark. The research draws criticism from industry for caution, which is rather the point. It is the consumer-safety database of our non-profits collection, the place to look something up before you buy it.
