Ellen MacArthur broke the world record for sailing solo around the globe in 2005, then retired from racing after grasping, alone with finite supplies at sea, that the economy runs the same way. Her foundation, launched in 2010, put the circular economy on the global agenda: design out waste, keep materials in use, regenerate nature. It works with companies, cities, and universities, and its fashion and plastics initiatives set the reference points our own scorecard criteria lean on. It is the circular-economy think tank of our collection.
