Ecosia was founded in Berlin in 2009 by Christian Kroll, who came back from a trip around the world convinced tree planting was the highest-leverage everyday climate action he could automate. The search engine routes its ad profits into reforestation, has planted over 200 million trees across dozens of countries, runs on renewable energy, and publishes its financials monthly.
