Spell
About Spell
Founded in Byron Bay, Australia by sisters Isabella Pennefather and Elizabeth Abegg, starting as a market-stall jewellery label around 2008 to 2009 before growing into a global womenswear brand. Formerly Spell & The Gypsy Collective (also traded as Spell Designs); the name was shortened to Spell in recent years, dropping the word 'gypsy'.
Aims to become one of the most inspiring and conscious fashion brands in the world, on the understanding that every garment produced has an impact, organized around three pillars of People, Planet and Prosperity.
Elevated bohemian womenswear: dresses, tops, bottoms, denim, knits, outerwear, swim, intimates and robes, plus a kids line and accessories such as jewellery, footwear, bags, hats and scarves, designed and sampled in Byron Bay's Arts & Industry Estate.
Certified B Corp publishing annual impact reports since 2017; FY23 reported 90.4% preferred fibres and an 8.5% reduction in average per-product emissions. Suppliers across China, India, Peru, Vietnam and Cambodia must meet SEDEX, SMETA, GOTS, SA8000 or BSCI standards, and the brand runs the reSpell resale program and the Spell Salvage end-of-life garment take-back.
