IKEA was founded in Sweden in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad, starting as a mail-order household goods business before opening its first furniture showroom in 1958.

IKEA's stated vision is to create a better everyday life for the many people, delivered through affordable, flat-pack, self-assembly home furnishings.

It sells furniture, kitchens, textiles, lighting, home decor, small appliances, and children's products through its stores and website, plus a smaller range of food items.

In FY25, 96.5 percent of the wood IKEA used was FSC-certified or recycled, and cotton is sourced through the Better Cotton program. The retail side, Ingka Group, is owned by a nonprofit foundation rather than shareholders, which the company says lets it reinvest profits into the business and sustainability goals, though it is not a certified B Corp.
