thredUP was founded in 2009 in Oakland by James Reinhart, who famously stared at a closet full of clothes he never wore and built a company around everyone else's. It grew into one of the largest online thrift stores in the world, processing millions of garments through automated distribution centers, and went public in 2021. Its resale-as-a-service arm powers secondhand programs for major brands, and its annual Resale Report is the industry's reference dataset.
